My Interview with Girls Aloud

The chance to interview the UK’s No. 1 girl group doesn’t come along everyday and I was looking forward to catching up with Cheryl and Kimberley, who happen to be my two favourite members of Girls Aloud. But the interview didn’t get off to the best start, with me arriving at Universal Records headquarters in London at my alloted interview time to find that the girls hadn’t turned up yet. The PR girl was apologetic and friendly but there was little she could do, we just had to sit and wait. I expected the worse – it’s not unusual for acts to be delayed by literally hours, and sometimes a late start means their schedule is squeezed and your interview is cancelled altogether.
But I shouldn’t have doubted them – just 15 minutes later Kimberley strode into the foyer all by herself, no entourage needed, wearing tight jeams, a wraparound top and lashings of fake tan. Five minutes later she was followed by Cheryl, dressed in a tracksuit offset by her enormous wedding ring. Its centrepiece is a large yellow diamond shaped like a heart, surrounded by a row of large diamonds, on a thick diamond-encrusted band. That might be some women’s dream ring, but to me it just looked garish.
The girls are obviously great mates with lots to catch up on, so it was another 20 minutes before our chat could finally begin. The aim of the interview was to discuss their Red Nose Day single and their recent work for Comic Relief – Kimberley travelled to South Africa to see how money raised was helping families in need, and Cheryl took part in a celebrity version of The Apprentice, which airs this Thursday and Friday nights on BBC. Read the interview in full here.
But that’s not all – the girls spent lulls in the interview gossiping with each other, discussing everything from how funny bandmate Sarah Harding looks in the Comic Relief Walkers Crisp ad, to Charlotte Church’s pregnancy. I squeezed in a few questions about their upcoming tour (they’re rumoured to be performing a Spice Girls medley) and how they feel about bandmate Nadine Coyle moving to LA to be closer to boyfriend Jesse Metcalfe. I’ll post their answers on this blog in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out our pic together in the album, right.
